University overview

Columbia University in the City of New York is a private university located in New York City. It traces its origins to King's College, which was founded in 1754 under a royal charter granted by King George II of England and enrolled its first class in the summer of 1754 in a vestry room at Trinity Church in what is now Lower Manhattan. Classes were suspended during the American Revolution; the institution reopened in 1784, chartered by the New York State Legislature as Columbia College, and a subsequent charter established Columbia College in the City of New York as a privately governed college. Its two undergraduate schools are Columbia College and The Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science (Columbia Engineering).
