Emory University is a private research university in Atlanta, Georgia. It traces its origin to 1836, when the Georgia Methodist Conference received a charter to establish Emory College in Oxford, Georgia, named after Methodist bishop John Emory. In the early twentieth century, following a 1914 offer of $1 million from Asa Griggs Candler, founder of The Coca-Cola Company, the institution was established in Atlanta. Emory has Methodist roots and is a member of the Association of American Universities. Undergraduates enroll through two colleges: Emory College of Arts and Sciences on the Atlanta campus and Oxford College on the original campus in Oxford, Georgia; applicants may apply to one or both.
